6 TIPS FOR A BEAUTIFUL TABLE SETTING

By Alejandro Gonzalez for Tlazo Home

ONE: Inviting Always Beats Perfect

The most important thing I can tell you: let go of perfection. A table that feels warm and considered will always be more memorable than one that looks like a showroom. Your guests are there to enjoy a meal and each other, your job is simply to make them feel welcomed and delighted.

TWO: Start with a Theme (But Keep It Interesting)

A theme doesn't have to feel gimmicky, think of it more as a creative lens that makes your decisions easier. When you have a direction: choosing linens, florals, and tableware becomes intuitive rather than overwhelming.

The key? Resist the obvious. For Thanksgiving, skip the expected turkeys and acorns. Instead, draw inspiration from an English hunting lodge in autumn , think rich plaids and tartans, animal-motif plates, and warm earthy tones. Or channel a French countryside picnic: lavender blooms, golden-yellow check linens, and mismatched vintage flatware. These unexpected angles are what people remember.

FLOR DE LUZ CORONA:

Lavishly adorned with wax flowers, leaves, and lace, these handcrafted candles are made in Mexico by a family with over 130 years of candlemaking tradition. Once created as devotional offerings, they've evolved into luminous centerpieces for celebrations of all kinds. Beautiful for festive dinners or as a heartfelt hostess gift.

THREE: Embrace the Rule of Threes

When it comes to centerpieces, one strong focal point is enough,  but I love applying the rule of threes to the full tablescape. A larger floral arrangement at the center, flanked by two smaller ones, or paired with candelabras or votive clusters, creates a sense of rhythm and intention down the length of the table. It looks deliberate without feeling overdone.

FOUR: Mix Patterns With Confidence

Pattern mixing sounds intimidating, but there's a simple trick that makes it foolproof: find one color that threads everything together. Start with a multi-color floral, pick out a single hue you love…say, a sage green, then add a green stripe or gingham, and perhaps a small-scale print in that same green. Suddenly, what could have looked chaotic reads as collected and curated.

FIVE: Build a Versatile Dish Collection

Not everyone starts out with multiple sets of dishes, and that's perfectly fine. My advice: begin with a classic set in white or ivory. They're endlessly versatile and serve as the perfect backdrop. From there, you can layer in personality , a set of hand-painted salad plates, splatter ware soup bowls, or chargers with an interesting texture. These additions work beautifully alongside your base set and give you so much more to play with over time.

SIX: Table Setting Isn't Just for Formal Occasions

This might be the tip I feel most strongly about: You don’t need a special occasion or a formal dinner to set a beautiful table.
— Alejandro

Whether it's a casual Sunday lunch or a holiday gathering, taking the time to create an intentional space for your guests tells them they matter.

And you don't need to know the "rules" of formal place settings to pull it off. Use what you have, arrange it with care, and get creative. I promise, your guests will be moved by the fact that you created something just for them. It elevates the meal, the conversation, and the whole experience.
